Working as legal secretary for more than a decade, Jackie West participated in her share of remarkable cases – defending marriage equality, fighting discrimination against people with disabilities, and influencing the laws of international trade.
“I was proud of the work,” Jackie said. “It was always fast-paced and a lot of pressure.” But so was her daily commute over the Santa Cruz mountains – an aggravation that ultimately inspired her to seek more work-life balance at ROI Communication, whose headquarters happen to be just a few minutes from her house.
Jackie now commutes by bicycle, and puts her outstanding communication and organizational skills to work in support of ROI’s executive team. She’s so adept at her job that she not only improves their performance, but their work-life balance, too. “I like being able to make a positive difference,” Jackie said.
Jackie began her career at the Law Offices of Howard Kim Graham in Santa Cruz, where she supported investigations, prepared legal documents, provided trial support, tracked cases, maintained calendars and managed the firm’s back office functions including payroll, invoices, and accounts payable. Later, she took that experience to the Silicon Valley offices of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, a global firm working in litigation, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, employment law, international trade and human rights.
It was in this challenging, intense environment that she came to appreciate the power of direct communication. And while she concedes that there’s no one right way to communicate with everyone, she favors honesty and clarity. “If you demonstrate trust and respect, people generally do the same in return.”
A graduate of Sonoma State University with a BA in English Literature, Jackie loves cooking, biking, camping, playing with her dog, and spending time with her husband and young daughter.
