The biggest tip Spencer Bullock ever got was a crisp $100 bill, and it wasn’t for the ice cream sundae he had just served a customer at Baskin-Robbins – it was for how he had communicated with the man over the past year: with kindness, consistency and humanity.
“Communicating well is essential to the human experience,” Spencer said. “I always try my hardest to understand other people and where they’re coming from, regardless of whether they can get the words out.”
That spirit of empathy makes him a perfect fit at ROI Communication, where he helps keep operations at headquarters running smoothly – handling outside queries, supporting the talent team, maintaining the database and pinch-hitting in a range of key back-office roles.
“I think it’s important to dedicate yourself to the work, no matter how small a task may seem,” he said. “Make it fun, make it enjoyable, make it worth your time.”
Spencer, who joined the ROI team in 2016, developed his interest in communications at Cabrillo College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Communications Studies, and won his department’s Communication Award. In a sense, though, he had been honing his skills for years, serving customers and managing co-workers at Baskin-Robbins, and working in the hotel industry for Quality Inn & Suites.
When Spencer isn’t working, he loves frequenting flea markets and second-hand stores, where he sources inventory for his Etsy shop. From leather goods to unusual décor, Spencer has an eye for detail and a talent for selecting items that others will enjoy. “I get a great sense of satisfaction knowing that there are other people who like the same things as I do. Selling what I find allows me to enjoy these items vicariously,” he said. “It also helps me keep my own collections in check!”
