Shortcut: How Analogies Reveal Connections, Spark Innovation and Sell Our Greatest Ideas

Do neighboring countries really topple like dominoes? Is DNA evidence the fingerprint of the 21st century? Is the marketplace a battlefield? Surprisingly, most of us don’t realize just how often analogies slip in under the radar to mislead or deceive — often with serious consequences. But analogies are also an extraordinary catalyst for innovation that have inspired everything from the printing press to the moving moving assembly line to the computer desktop. In Shortcut, a book the American Society of Journalists and Authors selected as the best general non-fiction book of 2014, ROI Communication’s John Pollack explores the power of analogy – and how we can use them more effectively to become more perceptive and persuasive.

Shortcut is now available for purchase.

John Pollack

One of four people who helped launch ROI Communication in 2001, John – a former Presidential Speechwriter for Bill Clinton – helps clients tap the full potential of language to articulate ideas, reveal truths, and persuade others to action. His fluency flows from working in politics, journalism and the corporate world – and from his creative use of analogy to reframe challenges and opportunities.

John has spent the past decade advising Fortune 500 executives and senior public officials on communication strategy. Prior to his tenure with ROI Communication, John worked at The White House and on Capitol Hill. He credits his keen ear for language to his early training as a violinist, which made him a good listener.

Pollack is the author of a three other books including The World on a String, Cork Boat, and The Pun Also Rises. John is a dynamic public speaker who has delivered talks at Google, the New York Public Library, the Clinton School of Public Service, the 92nd Street Y, national conferences and major universities. He lives in New York City.
